Styling a Denim Dress

May 20, 2021

Styling Beautifully with Volume and Denim!

It’s always fun to try a trend or two now and then, and one that has intrigued me is dresses cut with lots of volume, mainly because I’m a sucker for feminine pieces!

I chose a long sleeved stone wash heavy denim dress with press studs to the waist, a dropped waist with significant gathers to give a beautifully full skirt, pockets and the length just above the knee.

The v-neck lengthens the neck and the shorter, fuller skirt gives the dress movement and a feminine feel although the denim gives it a nice weight and structure.
Winding the sleeves up to just below the elbow helps to emphasise the waist.
The addition of the belt gives the dress plenty of shape and movement.

Is It Flattering?

Look, as I’ve said in previous posts, I’m not concerned about always feeling compelled to wear clothing that gives me a slimmer silhouette. I’m more interested in feeling happy and enjoying any given outfit – particularly since I’ve officially retired from my formal working life.

I still want to show some shape in this dress, however; and have given more emphasis to my waist with the addition of a fun gold chain belt and by rolling the sleeves up to just below the elbow.

I usually wear longer dresses, but the shorter length was in keeping with the fun cut of the garment which I took a step further by coordinating my denim embroidered booties and multi-coloured scarf.

The head scarf adds a bohemian vibe to the outfit – perfect for summer.
The stacked heel booties give the outfit a sense of edge and that much needed height without discomfort.
How nuts is the embroidery on these booties?! Just love how pretty and feminine it is.
How cute is this beautiful bag? The colour coordinates perfectly with the booties and other accessories…

I really urge you to step outside of your comfort zone and just dip a toe in the water with a trend that may take your fancy as you move into the next season – you might love it as much as I did!

And don’t forget to look at the bits and pieces you already have in your wardrobe and bring them forward into the new outfit – have fun because life’s too short to wear boring clothes!

Thank you so much for joining me in my little corner of the web and let me know what you think about experimenting with a trend here or there … and you can always pop over to @donnadoesdresses on Instagram for some more outfit ideas …

Thoroughly beautiful dress + styling, dear Donna. I’ve been madly in love with denim frocks ever since I was a young girl. I had a shirtwaist style one bought from a department store that was located just a few blocks away from our house at the time. It was dark denim and vaguely prairie style inspired. I loved it to bits and wore it until it was outgrown. I’ve rarely been without at least one denim dress since then. 🙂

Thank you so much for your kind comment – so appreciated! I really wasn’t sure about this dress as it was quite different from what I’d usually wear but now I’m pretty sure I love it!
Enjoy the rest of your week!
