3 Ways to style a pre-loved dress to keep it current!!

August 3, 2020

Warm, Rich Colour and Soft Fabrics

I actually picked up this dress from my favourite pre-loved clothing store in Wollongong before the dreaded C-19 but only got around to wearing it out to dinner a couple of weeks ago!

Although many restrictions have been lifted here in the state of New South Wales, Australia, we have been careful about getting about and have actually gotten a bit out of the habit of going out – have you been finding this is the case where you are?

Anyway, so to go to our favourite restaurant I felt this dress was perfect with its rich rosy colours and gorgeous softness of the velveteen – so sensual and feminine!

Three Ways To Style Old As New!

Firstly: Colour, Print and Cut…

First thing I do to keep my pre-loved finds current is to buy them in a colour palette, print and cut that is popular here and now. A classic never dates!!

This colour of burgundy, rose, berry is being seen everywhere this winter and quite frankly it’s a colour that tends not to date.

The print of the dress is a muted and modern floral and it encases the figure smoothly with it being a classic sheath. The sweetheart neckline is pretty and flattering all at once so that my little red necklace was set off perfectly and the sheer sleeves take the dress from day to evening.

Secondly: Fun, Current and Edgy Accessories…

The second thing I do to make a pre-loved find current is to add some fun and edgy accessories.

Added to this pretty look was the soft velvety cropped faux fur jacket, textured burgundy tights a fun, sparkly bag, cool red sunnies and high-heeled suede boots. Such additions give a current and fun look to “an old dress” whereas skin tone hose, boring pumps and so on could make the outfit look outdated.

I debated whether to wear a cropped black or burgundy leather jacket, but as I was styling a more glamourous look I went for the faux fur, although the leather would definitely give a nice edgy appearance and maybe even make it more current – it’s definitely a case of horses for courses!

The little wisteria seed pods hanging down around me are interesting as we look forward to beautiful spring being just around the corner!

Thirdly: A Bit of tude!

The third thing that I recommend to make a pre-loved item current is to wear some attitude!! A big smile, good posture and plenty of confidence goes a long way.

I can assure you that I get a bit of side-eye, getting about remote regional and rural Australia always dressed to a certain standard in all manner of eclectic ways but it’s remarkable how many people comment favourably and warmly and in fact my style is frequently a conversation starter and ice breaker!!

No matter what your style, the important thing is to own it and wear it with oomph and to make no apologies and take no prisoners!!

Fashion can be another way in which we communicate with the world, so why not let it see you and hear you?

I picked up this antique handbag at a little antique shop and love all the detailed beading on it and the boots were given to me by my son’s girlfriend who found them to be too small when she ordered them online … great win for me!!

So get out there and show the world how fabulous you are and be proud that you’re helping the planet in some small way by wearing a pre-loved gem …. or not!!

Thank you for joining me in my little corner of the web!!

I hope the one way I styled it showed that even a second hand find can look current when things are so tough and pre-loved is looking more acceptable. Hope things are good with you, Lizzie!! 🧚🏻‍♀️❤️🐝

I have a dress near identical in green Donna. You already know how much I think these berry tones look great on you. And isn’t it amazing how accessories can really change up an outfit xx

Yess! I so agree, Laurie!! I just love a more edgy look and feel the boots achieve that when it’s cool enough to wear them. It would be interesting to see this dress in green. Have a great new week!

Oh thank you so much dear Tamara!! It is a type of velveteen and it’s a cosy soft fabric – everyone else was in jeans and whatever lol … but I do love getting dressed up!! 🧚‍♀️❤️🐝

Sizzlingly gorgeous! The neck (and shoulder, for that matter) line on this curve hugging stunner is off-the-charts fantastic on you. So, so, soooo gosh darn stunning!!!

I have to agree that it’s a really beautiful dress and it felt so good to wear as the fabric is soft and very comfortable. Thank you for your kind comment and hope you and yours are doing well during this tricky time!
