‘I Love A Sunburnt Country’ – Dorothea Mackellar

January 5, 2020

Surviving the Bushfires?! We still don’t know..

As the first week in 2020 rang in we’ve left our farm in Eden, on the south coast of Australia and have headed back up to Wollongong, while the worst bushfires our country has ever seen tear along the coast and inland killing over 500 million animals, birds and reptiles.

At the time of writing there is a bushfire raging near our beautiful farm in Eden – and we don’t know of it can be saved.

The diamonds on the map are all bushfires.

The darker shade is the fire burning and you can see that the darker shaded space is close to the villages of Nethercote and Eden …

There have never been such catastrophic bushfires in the history of Australia – at least since white invasion – so many quaint little villages are razed to the ground, the main highway south is still closed in parts, because fires are still raging and so many homes and businesses have been lost… it is a dark time in Australian history, a very dark time!!

It feels like we’re in the middle of a dystopic movie about Armageddon – a very bad movie!

Getting Out and About!!

Still when the going gets tough …

We decided to go out for a nice evening to take our minds off the fire disasters ..

We didn’t really celebrate my birthday on the 27th of December, for a whole lot of reasons, so it was nice to have an evening out last night.

I bought this red dress from Australian designers, Review Australia.

The smaller red, white and black floral print and gives this dress a sweet 1940s vibe which is also mirrored in the little tied sleeve, v-neckline and frilled skirt.

Red For The Win!

I added an old, red, elastic belt with a pretty bow and cute earrings.

I also wore my old red and black patent Mary-Jane shoes and my old red wicker handbag and I think the outfit pulled together rather well!!

The area that has burned so far is as big as Belgium and more.

We hope and pray that more catastrophic conditions don’t prevail to enable these dreadful bushfires to continue and that our property survives this awful time!!

I’m so sad about what is happening to your beautiful country…and so many animals whose lives and homes have been lost (and people, too!). I’ve donated to several organizations now – it never feels like enough and money doesn’t put out the fires but sometimes when you don’t know what else you can do…

Your dress and outfit are lovely. How nicely your red MaryJanes would have gone with the black and white houndstooth dress I wore last week!

I hope your home will be safe, and these fires are under control soon!

Thank you so much for your kindness and support, it means so much to me – and your donations will all help, it’s just such a sad and worrying time!! Our farm has just avoided the fire at this point with another bad fire weekend expected next weekend.. and yes, you’re right about the shoes and they would’ve worked great with that little dress!!
Have a good week and once again thank you for your comment!!

I was burnt out of my land by California fires, and am now relocated to another state.

I love red! This year I want to add a little color to my wardrobe. I have been following a couple of Australian bloggers so I was aware of the fires but I didn’t realize the extent of how many animals have died. I sure pray that these bush fires die down soon and that lots of rain comes!

Donna, I’ve been keeping you and your beautiful country in my prayers! It saddens me so much to see so much destruction. I know there’s multiple fires but I’m really hoping they can get it under control soon <3

I do hope you had a nice birthday and evening out considering. You look absolutely gorgeous in this 40s inspired ensemble. But then again, you always look so stylish!

That’s so lovely of you to say, Lizzie – and when someone as lovely as yourself says they like my outfit I take it very much to heart!! We have to watch and wait – the fires are scarily close, my friend and every prayer and good wish helps – and reasonable government policy!! 🧚🏻‍♀️❤️🐝

It’s so sad to hear about the fires and devastation. I hope so much that your farm at Eden is untouched. The dress is so cute, love the v neck and print, not to mention those elegant shoes! Thanks for joining #WowOnWednesday.

It is heartbreaking to watch what is going on in Australia. I’m glad that the bushfires avoid your farm and I hope it stays like this. Great that you find some time to have a lovely evening and celebrate your birthday. You look beautiful in the pictures. I love the vintage vibes. It seems that red is your color. Sassy!

Oh thank you so much, Anna!! I appreciate your kind comment and support and yes I do love red – always seems to work for me!! Yess bushfires are a terrible worry, especially in light of our terrible, conservative government!

We also have these wildfire is summer. Summers in Alaska often smell like you put your head into a fire place. And, yes they are scary when they are close. Stay save. Thanks for joining the Top of the World Style Linkup party.
